MULTNOMAH COUNTY, Ore. (KPTV)— With warmer temperatures back in the Pacific Northwest, more people are looking to spend the sunny days on local trails but officials are reminding hikers to be prepared after two separate incidents over the weekend.

The first incident occurred Friday evening when friends of a 61-year-old hiker reported her missing after she didn’t return home from a planned hike in the Columbia River Gorge. After hours of searching, search and rescue teams found her body at the bottom of a cliff near the Horsetail Falls Trail.

On Saturday, two hikers called 911 telling dispatch they were stranded in the woods near Multnomah Falls. They spent the night in the woods and were able to hike out the next day.

Deputy John Plock from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said preparing for the worst-case scenario makes all the difference.

“Wear good footwear,” Plock said. “Be prepared to have to stay the night. People I don’t think realize that these trails here are hardcore hiking trails.”

At the Angel’s Rest Trailhead, FOX 12 spoke to experienced hikers about what they do to prepare. Jimmy Brown and his girlfriend, Kailey Engle, have been hiking most of their lives and bring the essentials each time they venture out on a trail which includes food, water, and sunscreen.

“We got two Jimmy John Sandwiches we got our yeti and our hydro flask and we got some sunblock on today,” Brown said.

“Appropriate clothing wear the right shoes,” Engle said. “Also, look at the trail before so you know what you’re getting into.”

Casey Lawson and Tami Ankeny also know how to prepare for hikes after years of exploring the trails in the Gorge. Even if it’s a quick hike, like up to Angel’s Rest, they’re still wearing proper shoes and clothing, bringing food and water, and a small first aid kit.

“You need to be able to get yourself out of a situation you put yourself in which is being prepared,” Lawson said. “Having that water, having extra water, having water for someone other than yourself. Bringing everything with you even if you think is overkill.”

Ankeny has experience as an outdoor educator and her biggest advice is to know your limits.

“I want people to get outside,” Ankeny said. “I’m an outdoor educator, I want people to experience the outdoors. I think it’s just making sure you’re willing to learn and do it safely. That’s the important thing.”
