Hikers were stranded overnight Saturday

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A day after a hiker fell to her death in the Gorge, two more hikers became stranded overnight on a cliff near Multnomah Falls, but successfully made their way out of the woods late Sunday morning, authorities said.

Crews with the Corbett Fire Department and deputies with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office began conducting the search for the two women as soon as they were reported missing Saturday night.

“People I don’t think realize that these trails up here are hardcore hiking trails and the weather can be volatile,” Deputy John Plock with the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said. “You can start a hike and it’s a really nice day and then the weather can turn and it can get really bad. So people need to be prepared. People need to plan for the worst case scenario.”

MCSO said their rescue teams spent several hours hiking through difficult terrain and bramble bushes in an attempt to physically reach the hikers Sunday morning.

“They ended up on a cliff and they said they couldn’t find a way up or down or out,” Plock said.

“There was way too much vegatation, all briars and thorns, so we were never able to deploy the ropes,” said Clackamas County Rope Team Leader Carl Worth. “We were slipping and sliding down loose dirt and holding on to thorny vines to hold ourselves up.”

The hikers, whose names have not been released, were able to call for help and crews found their location using a cell tower. A drone from the Corbett Fire Department was also used during the search.

The drone spotted the hikers at around 9 a.m. on a cliff and rope rescue crews were brought in to assist.

Once the sun came up, they were able to walk out of the woods on their own.

“One of them were in shorts and her legs are a little bit scratched up and bruised,” Plock said. “The other one I think was in leggings. They were both just wearing running shoes.”

He said people don’t think they’re going to get stuck on a hike but it happens all the time.

“We want people to be prepared and to dress appropriately, appropriate footwear, warm clothing, layers for the worst case scenario,” he said.
