What do you get when you combine a poised chess champion and a precise Top Gun lieutenant? A rather tricky relationship that dances between the lines of love and corruption.

Joining together in what Deadline calls “a high-action, genre-bending love story,” are Anya Taylor-Joy from Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit and Miles Teller from the latest box office success, Top Gun: Maverick in Scott Derrickson’s new film, The Gorge.

Teller & Joy to Convey With Poised Chemistry

Teller—having starred in movies that epitomize determination for his biopic role in Bleed For This, courage for his Fantastic Four role, and affection for his role in Two Night Stand—should bring nothing but his charm and tenacious stamina in Derrickon’s romantic action film. While Taylor Joy has recently begun her acting career with roles that embody an earnest seriousness like her roles in Emma and The Menu, we should expect nothing less than a convincing lead with a possibility of genuine or manipulated love, as Joy’s performance has the ability to allure the hearts of her co-stars in either manner.

The Gorge has been in the works for some time, with the film first announced in August 2022. There has not been a set release date, but with Derrickson’s 2021 film The Black Phone raising hairs on the spines of viewers, there’s no way that his new motion picture won’t thrill in the same manner.

Known for his filmmaking in terror that will leave you speechless from his twisted ideology in The Exorcism of Emily Rose, gripping for answers for his direction of Sinister, and depicting what’s real and what’s part of the unknown domain we inhabit for his screenwriting and direction of Doctor Strange, Derrickson should have no trouble delivering that same unsettling motive in The Gorge.

Not only will Teller be starring alongside Taylor Joy in this romantic thriller, he will also executive produce alongside Derrickson and a multitude of others such as Skydance’s CEO David Ellison, The Tomorrow War’s co-producer Adam Kolbrenner, and Skydance’s creative visionary Dana Goldberg.

Many more imaginative deviants will help produce the film like Don Granger, Greg Goodman, Sherryl Clark. Dean, and Robert Cargill.

The Gorge will mark the unification of Derrickson and screenwriter Cargill, as they worked together on previous horror successes like The Black Phone, Sinister, and Doctor Strange. Reeling together in similar interests while Cargill was a film critic for Ain’t It Cool News, Derrickson grew fond of Cargill’s point of view, leading to their inherent relationship today.

In remembering their first encounters, Cargill tells Slash Film in an exclusive interview of his and Derrickson’s origin, “He enjoyed the reviews where I was positive about a movie that everyone else was flagging. And whenever I did that, he would go and he'd be like, "All right, I got to watch it." And then he would love the movie and he would see it the way I did. And the first movie he wrote to me on was William Friedkin's "Bug." And he wrote me this nice letter about how he wasn't going to see it because everyone was bagging on it. And then I wrote the review I did. And he is like, "Well, I got to check it out." And he goes, "I loved it. I absolutely loved it. I'm always going to trust your reviews from here on out."

Derrickson would then eventually invite Cargill to the screening of The Day The Earth Stood Still where Cargill pitched him an idea for his next film. Derrickson was so fond of his organized yet thrashing mind, that he prompted Cargill to immediately write a three-to-five-page detailed treatment for what would later become the supernatural horror film, Sinister — a movie based off of a nightmare that Cargill had after watching The Ring. But that’s not it. Derrickson liked Cargill’s work ethic so much, that he proudly asked him to work alongside him from there on out, saying, “I've never had an experience like this. Will you just be my writing partner?"

Though there’s not much information on the synopsis of The Gorge, what we do know, is that with minds like Cargill, Derrickson, and the many critically acclaimed brains of horrifying schematics working on its production, that its objective will be nothing short of induced pacing hearts. Add a love story to its plot, and there’s no telling where this crew will take its exhilaration.

Sigourney Weaver to Star Alongside Teller & Taylor Joy

Starring alongside Teller and Taylor Joy is fifty-year cinematic veteran Sigourney Weaver who has evolved through her years in film with roles in sci-fi, horror, drama, and comedy. Without even announcing the remaining cast of The Gorge, the trio already makes for an epic lineup full of well-controlled skill.

There are a few definitions of the word “gorge,” leading eager audiences to believe that the film’s summary revolves around something of a sickening array of events that will have you dodging the twists and turns of the cause and effect. And with not much to go off of from its cast and filmmakers, the anticipation for this ghastly masterpiece rises to the summit of Cargill’s call to film.

Though it may be months or even a year until we get to see The Gorge, its unnerving background just might be worth the wait.
