“I’ve seen more people climb out of a clown car at the circus than what this place could hold at full capacity,” Critic Brad A. Johnson says of the diminutive Bird & Barrel in Santa Ana. While it may take some time to get a seat in the cramped space, Johnson said the cocktail and food menu make for a worthwhile experience.  Read Brad’s review of the new spot.

Closing up a Tackle Box 

Gourmet seafood and sandwich spot Tackle Box has permanently closed its Costa Mesa outpost.

Its original location in Corona Del Mar is temporarily closed but will reopen next month, Anne Valdespino reports. Read more.

Selling a prized Sapphire

The owner of some beloved OC spots will take over the Sapphire Laguna Restaurant and Pantry in Laguna Beach by March. Restaurateur Russ Bendel, who owns Vine Restaurant in San Clemente, Ironwood in Laguna Hills and Olea in Newport Beach, is adding Sapphire to his collection. Read more.

A new spot for gourmet halal

Khan Saab, a new restaurant specializing in halal cuisine from Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, is opening in Fullerton. The menu includes items such as wood-fired steaks and alcohol-free cocktails. Read more.

The future of a relic

Hot Dog on a Stick, a quintessential addition at many a mall food court, actually began as a beachside stand in Santa Monica. The original location dating back to 1946 may soon be no more, reports Fielding Buck. Read more.
