James Corden Would Rather Drag Cats (Again) Than Eat Stinky Cod Sperm - Vanity Fair

Cats was a rich text. It was one of the biggest flops of 2019, a surrealist meditation on digital fur technology about what would happen if cats got together and simply begged to be murdered. The musical, directed by Tom Hooper, left viewers with a slew of unanswered questions, usurping Knives Out’s place as the biggest mystery of the year. One thing is certain, though: James Corden will be talking about it for the rest of his life.

The Late Late Show host, who starred in the musical as the hedonistic Bustopher Jones, spoke candidly about the project (again!) in a Thursday night interview with Justin Bieber. The duo were playing Corden’s trademark game Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts, in which competitors are tasked with either answering a ridiculous question, or eating a disgusting snack (all manner of bugs and balls and what have you). When asked by Bieber how much he regretted making Cats, on a scale of 1 to 10, Corden opted to answer the question honestly instead of eating the giant cod sperm snack in front of him.

“Here’s the thing,” Corden began. “I had the loveliest time making that film. It took me six days, and I loved every single second of it.”

He continued, diplomatically crafting his response. “You’ve gotta decide things based on your own personal experience,” he said. “So I don’t regret doing it at all…I’m gonna put it at a solid…4.5.”

This echoes a past comment Corden has made about the film, in which he was careful to separate the art from the experience. He can’t even really talk about the art—and you know why? Because he has said that he refuses to watch the actual movie, which was ridiculed by critics.

“I can’t imagine I’ll see it,” Corden told the New Yorker in a story published in January. “It’s important to say I had the best time making it. At some point you have to go, How am I going to judge my own experience? Am I only going to have enjoyed something if it was successful?”

All of which is more tactful than his initial stance, which was to shrug and say, “I’ve heard it’s terrible. I’ll catch it one day, I imagine.” When that day comes, we’ll be the first to hear about it.
