PEORIA (WEEK) – Peoria’s Warehouse District has at least one spot that takes authenticity to the next level.
And the art inside speaks for itself.
Luke Burdsall went to visit Casa de Arte, part Mexican restaurant, part art gallery.
Co-owner Arturo Vargas said that as an artist himself, he wanted to give local artists a space to display their work.
“We wanted to, you know, be a Hispanic place where the name says “Casa de Arte,” he said. “But yet the different art brings in a different culture.”
Vargas said it’s got all kind of Mexican offerings served up their way.
Oh, and when the sun sets and the lights get turned down low, you can expect musical entertainment.
Sometimes it’s karaoke, other times it’s a DJ. But if you get lucky, you might just catch Vargas singing.
“We wanted to have – where we are from in Mexico – just that simple style and certain taste, that regional taste,” he said.
And he’s not exaggerating.
They make sure everything is done just right – from the guacamole his wife makes fresh each day, down to the way the meat is cooked.
“They can taste the authenticity that it is,” Vargas said. “You know, how authentic it is.”
Regulars like Micheline Maloof said when it comes to the food here, this is her trusted source for good Mexican.
“Really, whenever I’m having this hankering for tacos…best place in town,” she said.
For Luke though, the choice was easy.
Steak quesadillas…and some good guac.
To wash it all down, you bet horchata was ordered. Trust Luke – cinnamon rice milk = amazing.
Pro tip, once you dip that quesadilla in that guac, you’ll be sitting there with some very happy taste buds.
