Winter storm expected in the Gorge & Cascades - Fox 12 Oregon

susahmadang.blogspot.com

Good morning! It’s a chilly start to our Wednesday with some areas of fog in the lowlands. The breezier spots near the Gorge are generally fog-free. Road surfaces should be mostly dry during the morning commute, but rain is not too far away. Expect the rain to move in between mid to late morning, with a soggy & breezy back half of today. High temperatures will struggle to reach the mid 40s.

The rain will be generated by a Pacific frontal system moving in from the southwest. Later this afternoon, cooler air will start pouring in from the Gorge. The combination of steady precipitation and modified arctic air moving in will lead to temperatures falling into the 30s. The Portland metro area and the west end of the Gorge will be right on the dividing line between a cold rain and wet snow. Most signs point to the metro staying several degrees above freezing (at the very least). I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a period of wet snow or a quick dusting in the West Hills or far western Washington County. Based off of the latest computer model guidance though, our messaging is about the same as it was yesterday. The best chance of sticking snow will be east of Multnomah Falls. Areas south of the Portland metro should remain well above freezing.

A Winter Storm Warning goes into effect today for the Cascades and the Gorge, and will stay in place through Thursday evening. The Gorge could pick up anywhere from 3-8 inches of snow near river level, and likely 1-2 feet of snow in the Hood River Valley. Similarly, the Cascades above 2,500 feet should wind up with at least 1-2 feet of snow. Elevations above 4,000 feet could see 3+ feet of snow. This will be a very beneficial snow event for the Cascades, and great news overall for our ski resorts. Be prepared for tough traveling conditions though starting this afternoon.

Showers should taper off between Thursday and Friday, leading to mainly dry weather by the end of the workweek. A few showers can’t be ruled out Saturday & Sunday, but we should have plenty of dry time. It’ll also be trending warmer.

Have a great Wednesday!
