HINTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — The New River Gorge National Park & Preserve is asking for information from the public after a fire destroyed a historic barn at the Richmond Hamilton Farm.

The farm site is on the southern edge of the national park between Hinton and Sandstone Falls. According to a Facebook post by the park, the barn was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

The fire was reported around 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22. Although park law enforcement rangers and firefighters from the Summers County Volunteer Fire Department and Jumping Branch/Nimitz Volunteer Fire Department worked to contain the fire, the barn was totally lost, the post said.

Anyone with information should call the National Park Service dispatch at 304-547-3590, submit an anonymous tip online or by calling 888-653-0009.

The Richmond Hamilton Farm is one of the few farms that are preserved to showcase subsistence farming online the New River. The historic log barn, which was made with hand-hewn chestnut logs and half-dovetail notching, was one of nine structures at the site.

The farm site is also the planned centerpiece for the park’s celebration for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, according to the post.
