EPHRATA – Roadway improvement projects slated to begin in March will significantly enhance access routes to the Gorge Amphitheatre and Sunland Estates, as announced by the Grant County Public Works Department. These projects aim to improve traffic flow and safety on Silica Road and Baseline Road West, crucial for the influx of visitors during The Gorge's bustling summer concert season.
Silica Road Enhancements
The project outlines include resurfacing 2.5 miles of Silica Road, extending from approximately half a mile south of Sunland Road to Road 1-Northwest. Additionally, a portion of Silica Road will undergo widening to add a center lane, spanning nearly a mile from one mile south of Sunland Road to its intersection with Sunland Road itself.
Baseline Road West Upgrades
Similarly, Baseline Road West will see nearly a mile of its stretch east of Silica Road widened to include a center lane and the addition of a turn lane, aiming to alleviate congestion and improve vehicular movement in the area.
Timely Completion Anticipated
Most of the roadway construction is scheduled for April, with a strategic plan to complete all projects before the onset of The Gorge's summer concert season, which kicks off on Memorial Day weekend. This timing is critical to ensure minimal disruption to the anticipated summer traffic.
Grant County Engineer Dave Bren emphasized the county's gratitude towards the public's patience during this period of construction. "Grant County appreciates the public’s patience and understanding during the construction of these roads,” Bren stated. “We know that it will be an inconvenience for motorists for several months this spring, but when it’s finished, these roads will look and drive great for a generation to come.”
Aim and Funding of the Projects
The primary objectives of these improvement projects are to ease congestion and enhance traffic flow during peak times when The Gorge hosts summer weekend shows. Furthermore, the upgrades will facilitate better access for first responders to assist attendees at The Gorge and residents of Sunland Estates.
Financially, the Silica Road asphalt resurfacing project has been awarded to Central Washington Asphalt for almost $900,000. The widening tasks for Silica Road and Baseline Road West have been entrusted to Wheeler Excavation, with the contract bid nearing $1.5 million.
