GLEN JEAN, W.Va. — The National Park Service said as of Monday evening that the Steep Valley Fire burning within the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in Fayette County remains at 2,206 acres and is now 100% contained.
The closure order has been lifted for the fire area. People are encouraged to avoid the area due to hazardous conditions, but any visitors are asked to use extreme caution due to fire-weakened trees.
“Firefighters will continue to monitor any remaining pockets of minimal activity and will respond as necessary.”, said Nicholas DePaulo, Incident Commander Trainee. “We continue to ask the public’s assistance in being aware of their surroundings so that everyone
stays safe in the reopened area.”
NPS officials said this will be the final update for the fire and that there will be downsizing of personnel happening in the coming days.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
