The Taos County Sheriff's Office was forced to postpone a recovery effort for the body of a suspected suicide victim in the Rio Grande this week after the remains were dislodged and floated further downstream.

The as yet unidentified body was reported on Nov. 10 after a vehicle belonging to a missing person was located the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge visitor parking area. A witness said they had seen someone jump from the center of the bridge around the time the vehicle was discovered.

Law enforcement used a drone to survey the gorge on Monday (Nov. 13) to pinpoint the location of the body approximately 1 mile downstream of the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and launched an initial recovery effort on Wednesday (Nov. 15).

In a press release, Taos County Sheriff Steve Miera made a statement emphasizing the importance of installing mesh underneath the bridge's 4-foot railings as a suicide deterrent. Currently, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is equipped with crisis phones, and a security guard patrols the bridge's visitor parking area on the west side of the gorge.

The sheriff's office is continuing its recovery efforts to relocate and recover the remains amid changing weather patterns this weekend that are expected to bring cooler daytime temperatures, higher winds and possible snowfall on Sunday (Nov. 19), according to the National Weather Service.
