To make holiday traveling easier, the North Carolina Department of Transportation is gearing up to pause construction in most areas.

According to AAA, travel in North Carolina is expected to meet pre-pandemic levels, with a predicted 1.5 million North Carolinians taking trips for the holiday. Of those, about 1.4 million are expected to drive.

“The North Carolina Department of Transportation will suspend all lane closures across the state with a few exceptions,” NCDOT spokesperson David Uchiyama said.

He said lane closures will be removed starting Tuesday night with the exception of two projects.

TRAFFIC ALERT: LONG-TERM CLOSURE RESUMES ON I-40 IN HAYWOOD COUNTY

Uchiyama said the most notable will be Interstate 40 through the Pigeon River Gorge, which will remain in a one-lane pattern.

“In both directions between mile markers 18 and 20 as we’ve seen just in day-to-day operations congestion, it can really back up,” he said. “The NCDOT highly recommends drivers consider taking I-26 west all the way to Kingsport, Tennessee and heading down to I-81 to rejoin I-40."

Uchiyama said some online maps will suggest other routes but the DOT does not recommend them.

The other exception will be on Old Fort Mountain, where a lane closure will also remain.

“There will be two lanes of travel instead of the typical three. Crews there are working on the concrete median,” Uchiyama said.

He said there is a temporary median there for safety but it’s quite an operation to remove it.

INTERSTATE 40 REVAMP: BRACE FOR LANE CLOSURES ON OLD FORT MOUNTAIN STARTING MONDAY

“There will still be two lanes up and down Old Fort Mountain, but usually there’s three,” Uchiyama said.

Uchiyama said it’s important for everyone to pack their patience and be kind.

When it comes to the I-40 lane work near Candler, Uchiyama said crews are working as hard as they can to open the closed lane on I-40 West between I-26 and Exit 44.

“However, with the impending rain, that may not be done in time for Thanksgiving Day,” he said.
