The Neapolitan pizza trend has spread like wildfire in recent years, but has somehow mostly skipped over northern Orange County, according to critic Brad A. Johnson. That makes the opening of Pietrini Pizza Napoletana in Los Alamitos overdue news.

And while the two pizzas he sampled traveled very successfully, Brad expects he’ll be back to enjoy more with a nice Sangiovese. Read more.

No hitting the snooze button  

Brad A. Johnson tried a lot of pastries from Rye Goods, which opened last month in Lido Marina Village, but it was the lemon curd morning bun that captured his attention most sharply. You’ll want to get to the shop nice and early to get one though, he says. Read more.

From snack attack to business 

Tech entrepreneur Jonathan Strietzel took a break from a project to snack on some potato chips and a a glass of $8 pinot noir. The combo was so good it led to Strietzel founding the business Wine Chips and now he’s got $1 million in online orders and his product is carried in 600 shops nationally. Read more.

Taking the tasting room home

How about some wine with those chips? The pandemic has made it hard and sometimes impossible for wineries to do on-site wine tastings, but that’s led to some innovation. Many wineries are now bringing the tasting room to their customers via social media and videoconferencing. Read more.

Honoring all grandmothers 

A Laguna Beach couple has opened a new takeout-only restaurant in Redondo Beach with a menu that combines their Mexican and Italian culinary heritages and the recipes of each of their grandmothers. Richard Guzman has more. Read more.

Cathy Thomas says this refried bean soup recipe is easy to make with a handful of ingredients and it’s also comforting. She says sampling a big spoonful of the soup with some cheese, cilantro and a tortilla chip is almost like taking a bite out of a delicious enchilada. Let’s Cook!
