Cooking Up Chili in Ithaca - Spectrum News

Carol Ambrose has been cooking up food at Brookton’s Market for several years. Before then she didn’t even consider herself much of a chef. But for the last two weeks she’s made chili every day.

What You Need To Know

  • This year, tasters will go to the individual restaurants over two weeks to try chili, instead of gathering for a day on the Ithaca Commons

  • Some places have special recipes like a chili calzone

  • Usually the event is a fundraiser for the Downtown Ithaca alliance, but this year restaurants keep money made from the dishes

“I’m not an expert chili maker," said Ambrose. “I pretend I’m Julia Child, ha, I’m about as old as she was.”

Although you don’t need to be an expert to make chili, she keeps making it day after day because, once again, they’ve entered the Ithaca Chili Cook-off, where almost 30 restaurants are competing to see who can make the very best bowl of chili.

She’s also entered another special chili dish, calzones.

“Ya know, plain old chili is good but I think kinda boring," said Ambrose.

Usually everyone crowds on the Ithaca Commons for a day and tries all the different dishes, but that wasn’t safe this year. So people are traveling to individual restaurants like Brookton’s Market to taste what they have to offer, and they keep the proceeds.

“Anything to drum up a little business. We’re trying everything to keep afloat," Ambrose said.

The cook-off is continuing through Sunday.
