A 17-year-old girl is in serious condition in a local hospital after the car she was in tumbled 150 feet down a Columbia River Gorge ravine on Wednesday, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Two other teenagers also were in the car.

The driver, 18, sustained minor injuries, and another passenger, 17, was uninjured. A helicopter took the injured girl to a hospital.

The crash, which investigators believe was caused primarily by speeding, occurred on Highway 30 near Shepperd’s Dell, where deputies were dispatched around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. They arrived at the 44800 block of the East Historic Columbia River Highway to find the crushed car in a ravine, the sheriff’s office reported.

All three teenagers were wearing seatbelts, the sheriff’s office reported. The crash occurred near a curve of the highway where the advisory speed is 20 miles per hour, according to the statement.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
