A family hike ended in disaster on Sunday, June 9, when a teenager fell to her death during a hike to Les Gorges Mystérieuse (The Mysterious Gorges) in Switzerland.
The American family and the daughter’s best friend had set out on the hike on Sunday morning around 10:30 a.m. to the popular tourist attraction at Tête Noire in the municipality of Trient. For reasons yet to be understood, the daughter’s friend fell 330 feet (100 meters) down an embankment. The family’s father tried to get to the teenage girl but got stuck on a rocky ledge and had to be rescued by emergency services. The emergency services found the teenage girl in the river bed of the river Trient but could only determine the death of the 16-year-old American.
The circular hiking trail is considered an easy 1-2 hour hike suitable for children aged six and older. The path leads down into the forest via steep stone steps and a set of walkways and bridges which takes hikers to the bottom of the gorge. A picturesque waterfall awaits hikers at the first gorge and a secret grotto called Grotte aux Nymphes (fairy grotto) at the next gorge, making the hike popular with families. While the hike is not considered difficult, there are steep sections which require hikers to use chain-rails provided to arrest from potential falls.
Neither the family’s identity nor that of the deceased friend have been made public by the Kantonspolizei Wallis/Valais.
