PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said a recent Columbia River Gorge speed racing mission this past weekend resulted in several citations and one felony arrest.
On Saturday, June 22, officials said a sergeant saw a motorcyclist without plates. The motorcyclist allegedly sped off immediately upon seeing the sergeant. However, a deputy followed up soon after and turned their emergency lights to signal wanting to pull the motorcyclist over “but the motorcyclist continued,” officials said. Law enforcement didn’t pursue the person, but shortly after that found that the person had crashed their motorcycle.

As MSCO explained in a release, “Deputies discovered the motorcyclist had crashed on Larch Mountain Road and ran into a wooded area. After about 20 minutes, he came out of the woods and surrendered. He was treated on-scene for injuries sustained from the crash and was charged with felony and misdemeanor elude.”

In addition to the felony arrest, the sheriff’s office said they completed 18 traffic stops, issued three citations, and gave 15 warnings during Saturday’s Gorge speed racing mission.
Deputies also visited Crown Point near Vista House during the mission, an area that they said has become popular for people getting together and doing “illegal street takeovers and racing” after hours. Sure enough, deputies said they saw people in the parking area after the park’s 9 p.m. close time and asked them to leave.
This all comes after several recent crashes believed to be caused by speeding have occurred in the Gorge, including one case where a teenager was seriously injured earlier this month after she was a passenger in a car that fell 150 feet down a ravine off Highway 30.
