Enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner By Letting Local Chefs Do The Cooking - Pittsburgh Magazine

Thanksgiving

The fourth Thursday in November is a bad day to be a turkey — or somebody who doesn’t know how to cook a turkey.

If you fall into the latter category, be thankful you live in Pittsburgh, where there’s always a restaurant willing to prepare the whole meal or a side so you don’t have to. Offerings range from traditional to eclectic and, when transferred from a take-out box to a casserole dish, can be passed off as your own culinary handiwork.

But, in the spirit of giving, you really should give credit where credit is due.

Community Kitchen Pittsburgh, 107 Flowers Ave., Hazelwood

The students at Community Kitchen Pittsburgh, a nonprofit culinary training center have your back this holiday season.

The Thanksgiving catering menu includes classic turkey with stuffing and herbs, mac and cheese, glazed yams, green bean casserole, brown butter mashed potatoes, rolls and cranberry sauce. There are also desserts available, from pumpkin pie to an entire cookie tray.

To order either go online, email ckcatering@ckpgh.org or call 412-313-6013 for pick-up only on Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Emporio: A Meatball Joint, 942 Penn Ave., Downtown

Why carve up a bird when you can roll it up?

The Thanksgiving Ball is a ground turkey, stuffing and cranberries in one tasty sphere. Order the Thanksgiving Bowl and get two on top of white cheddar mashed potatoes and sweet corn. Have a nice tryptophan!

Sprezzatura, 112 E. Sherman St., Millvale

Loosely translated, the Italian word “sprezzatura” means looking calm while obsessing over details. I think it sums up American Thanksgiving quite nicely.

Avoid the anxiety by letting Chef Jen Saffron — who is passionate about feeding people — and her crew cook. Order online and all you have to do is swing by the eatery on Wednesday, Nov. 23 between 4 and 6 p.m. to pick it up.

The menu puts a playful spin on typical Turkey Day offerings. There’s stuffed acorn squash, wild rice-and-mushroom stuffing, lemony chickpeas and orange pumpkin pie. Or you can chuck tradition altogether and order spaghetti and meatballs or a big pan of vegetable lasagna.

Burgatory, multiple locations

Practice binge eating at Burgatory with an all-natural turkey burger piled high with farmhouse cheddar, mashed potatoes, corn gravy, stuffing bread pudding and cranberry jam on a brioche bun. Wash it down with a pumpkin pie shake that’s made with house-made vanilla bean ice cream and actual pumpkin pie!

Local Provisions Market & Cafe, 1111 Freeport Road, O’Hara

The recently opened Local Provisions is a one-stop shop for all your culinary needs, including Thanksgiving eats.

In addition to selling beer, wine and artisan goods, co-owners Brian and Jessica Pekarcik offer meal kits. Order by 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16 for pickup on Nov. 23. Choose from a fully cooked smoked turkey or a local free-range bird to pop in the oven. Sides like roasted Brussels sprouts, garlic-and-chive mashed potatoes, and cornbread-and-sausage stuffing will make your family members very happy they invited you.

Pane è Pronto, 2627 Penn Ave., Strip District

Celebrate our American heritage with an Italian-influenced takeout meal for two from Chef Dave Anoia.

The main dinner features porchetta and porchetta gravy, Cacio e Pepe mashed potatoes, sausage, spinach, apple and pine nut stuffing, cauliflower casserole, cranberry and fennel sauce and assorted Italian cookies. There are also ala carte goodies to choose from and specialty breads (because carbohydrates are the real star of the holiday).

Farmer X Baker, 1101 Powers Run Road, O’Hara

If you aren’t eating Thanksgiving dinner inside a quaint farmhouse, do the next best thing and order your meal from Farmer X Baker for pickup on Wednesday, Nov. 23.

The field-to-foodie business has a cornucopia of deliciousness from the usual suspects (turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh cranberries and Challah rolls) to shareable apps (root vegetable pasta terrine and charcuterie boards) to desserts (flourless dark chocolate cake). Gluten-free options are in stock, too. Send an email to cateringfarmerxbaker@gmail.com.

Mad Mex, multiple locations

Since 2006, Mad Mex has packed an entire Thanksgiving meal into a burrito.

Take one bite of The Gobblerito and you’ll taste of house-roasted turkey, black bean mashed potatoes, stuffing and corn with gravy on top and cranberry sauce on the side. Gobble, gobble, indeed.

Adblock test (Why?)
