Royal Gorge RIO has received one of forty $5,000 MTN DEW Outdoor Grants in support of the organization’s ongoing commitment to champion the great outdoors. Based in Canon City, Colorado, Royal Gorge RIO is a 501c3 nonprofit that focuses on river conservation,
whitewater recreation, and water safety. As an organization that is passionate about the outdoors, Royal Gorge RIO believes it is crucial that we all do our part to protect and preserve the lands we love and enable people to get outside.

Royal Gorge RIO looks forward to using the $5,000 grant to purchase tow boulders to stabilize the north bank of the Arkansas River that connects the whitewater park to first street bridge. While Royal Gorge RIO’s overall goal is to expand the riverwalk and provide safe access for river enthusiasts and spectators, the organization highlight is being able access this area for the first time and expanding on our River Surf Initiative Project. This is important to us now because the City of Canon City has recently purchased the property and this is our chance to see a project that benefits everyone. This funding will support Royal Gorge RIO’s ongoing efforts in the Canon City community.
“To be recognized by MTN DEW and our local community for our work and commitment to the outdoors is very special,” says Warren Hart, vice president, Royal Gorge RIO. “We are so excited to receive a $5,000 grant to help gain access for more people in the community during a Dme where we have needed it most.”

Royal Gorge RIO is one of forty nonprofits to receive a grant through the MTN DEW Outdoor Grants program. The effort by MTN DEW is part of a long-term commitment to help community organizations across the U.S. who have faced funding and volunteer participation challenges due to the ongoing pandemic, and to provide outdoor enthusiasts with more access to the great outdoors by helping
remove some of the key barriers. The brand has donated more the $1.25 million to fuel outdoor passions to-date.

Valentine’s Day celebration slated for Feb. 5 at The Florence Pioneer Museum and Research Center

Calling all lovers of chocolate and wine—The Florence Pioneer Museum and Research Center, located 100 E. Front St. will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Feb. 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. The museum has four love stories that will be highlighted through the building: “Backyard Wedding,” “Smokestack Love,” “…And the Cradle Will Fall…” “I’ll Meet You Later,” and more. Admission will be by donation starting at 4 p.m.

There was a lovely reception to kick off 150 years of Florence in January with a map of the “Historic 18” pioneers that had land that became future Florence. This map will be up through February for those who missed it in January. There are also copies of the platted maps for early, early Florence–1872–(west of the Coal Creek tributary that goes through Florence today) and LaBran–1873–(east of the Coal Creek tributary). Eventually LaBran was vacated to make room for Florence. Come and join one and all for another relaxing and interesting evening at the Florence Pioneer Museum. https://ift.tt/2nhA0pB.
