The search for a missing swimmer at Launceston's Cataract Gorge is continuing after the young woman's friends and family "lost sight of her" yesterday afternoon.

The woman, aged in her 20s, was last seen swimming in the First Basin on Tuesday, when she reportedly became separated from her swimming companions.

The rescue helicopter, a police drone, police divers, State Emergency Service volunteers and Surf Lifesaving volunteers have all been involved in the search.

"Police would like to advise that several resources will be tasked to the Cataract Gorge, First Basin throughout the day [on Wednesday] and ask that members of the public avoid the area while search efforts continue," Tasmania Police said in a statement.

Police were called to the First Basin in the Cataract Gorge reserve, just after 1:00pm on Tuesday.

Acting Inspector Aleena Crack said the woman was with "friends and family and they've just lost sight of her".

The search continued into the night, and Inspector Crack said the search would continue "until we get a result".

There was a scheduled release of water by Hydro Tasmania into the Gorge from the Trevallyn Dam between 10:00am and 4:00pm on Tuesday for a paddling event.

A public notice printed in The Examiner newspaper said Hydro would release 35 cumecs of fast-flowing water and for people to "please check water conditions before getting in and ensure you're adequately prepared and experienced".

A Hydro Tasmania spokeswoman said: "Hydro Tasmania has been contacted by Tasmania Police regarding the missing swimmer at Cataract Gorge and is supporting their search efforts".

Another water release from the Trevallyn Dam was scheduled for Wednesday between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Inspector Crack would not speculate on whether Tuesday's planned water release had contributed to the incident.
