ODOT crews to complete improvements, maintenance that will cause closures and delays

COURTESY PHOTO: ODOT - Forest Lane Bridge, which spans I-84 at Cascade Locks, will be raised. This spring several maintenance projects will be completed through the Columbia River Gorge, from raising a bridge and blasting a tunnel, to paving and improving a busy interchange.

The work is being done by the Oregon Department of Transportation on Interstate 84 and the Historic Columbia River Highway. All of the projects should be underway by March.

Near Cascade Locks crews are raising the Forest Lane Bridge, which spans I-84, to allow tall or over-height trucks to continue along the interstate. That work will begin in February and take several months to complete. I-84 below the bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction around-the-clock to provide space for the work. The shoulder will also be narrowed.

Toothrock Tunnel, near Bonneville Dam, will have its aging floor repaired, and I-84 between Multnomah Falls and Cascade Locks will be repaved. That will take place through the fall, and travelers should expect nighttime lane and ramp closures, and daytime lane closures prior to Memorial Day.

A new 0.67-mile segment of the Historic Highway State Trail broke ground this month, and will connect the Viento Trailhead to Mitchell Point. The work will close the right lane on I-84 this month and into February.

Construction continues at Mitchell Point Tunnel, which will be a 655-foot tunnel with five arched windows inspired by the original tunnel of the same name that was built in 1915 and destroyed in 1966 to widen the highway. Blasting began in 2021 and is scheduled for completion in 2023. There will be rolling slowdowns for safety along I-84 between 9-11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays between Cascade Locks and Memaloose State Park, east of Mosier.

Finally maintenance work is repairing bridge bearings and joints on the Bridal Veil interchange, exit 28, that bridges over I-84. There will be nighttime closures of the east off-ramp and the on-ramp to I-84 west, and periodic nighttime single lane closures. There will also be flaggers directing traffic on the Historic Highway during weekdays.
