Friday brings frost to some Portland areas, high winds near the gorge; high of 50 - OregonLive

Overnight freezing temperatures in some metro locations will create frosty conditions, while locations near the Columbia River Gorge have warmer temperatures, but higher winds Friday.

A check of weather-monitoring stations across the area showed temperatures in the mid-20s in most of Washington County, but it was 35 in Troutdale about 5:30 a.m.

The National Weather Service says locally breezy conditions will continue through the day especially near the gorge and into the eastern portions of Multnomah County. Gusts are generally in the 20-30 mph range, but some high areas in the gorge, including Crown Point, are still seeing gusts up to 70 mph. Winds should begin to slacken overnight as the high pressure begins to weaken east of the Cascades.

The good news is that most of the Portland area has completely broken out of the fog. Fog will be more likely in the southern Willamette Valley in areas near Eugene and Cottage Grove.

Portland should have sunny skies the whole day and a high of about 50 degrees.

The air stagnation advisory remains in place through Friday afternoon, especially in areas that are sheltered from the east winds. As the high pressure weakens, forecasters will likely drop the advisory when onshore flow kicks in ahead of a new weather system moving in from the north.

Saturday will start off cool with areas of frost before 9 a.m. The day should be sunny and clear with a high around 50 degrees.

All eyes turn to Sunday, when a wet front approaches from the Gulf of Alaska bringing rain to the coast overnight, and into the valleys and the metro area later in the morning. Portland has an 80% chance of rain from this system, and most of Sunday should be wet. The high will be about 47 degrees.

Snow levels will start off fairly high about 3,500 feet. Most Cascade passes are near this level and should see some new snow from this system. The levels quickly drop to about 1,500 feet overnight and into Monday and colder air moves into the area. The mountains and even the higher foothills could see another round of snow to kick off next week.

Extended forecasts are showing rain lingering in the Portland area through about Tuesday before we’ll possibly dry out again for a few days.
