Weymouth teen known for cooking, love of soccer loses battle with cancer - The Patriot Ledger

WEYMOUTH — Danielle Elbehiry said her son, Dante, was a funny, outgoing and hardworking kid who loved soccer, cooking and his family.

Dante, who would have started his senior year at Weymouth High School next week, died of cancer on Thursday at the age of 17.

Weymouth High School boys' soccer coach Bill McEachern said Dante was a leader who was passionate about the game and always one of the hardest working players on the field.

Dante played high school soccer before his cancer diagnosis in March of 2020.

“Dante was a leader, and would have been a leader on the team this year so we made him an honorary captain. I’m glad we were able to get that message to him,” McEachern said. "It's devastating for the family and for his friends and teammates who were hoping to celebrate the last year playing together. He had tremendous potential and was really talented."

McEachern said the team will dedicate its season to Dante and have shirts made in his memory.

Elbehiry said Dante broke his ankle in 2019, but was determined to get back out on the field to play the sport he loved. She said he showed the same determination when faced with a terminal cancer diagnosis.

"He never wanted to give up," she said. "He was very driven."

Dante's parents, Moataz and Danielle Elbehiry, own Shawarma & Shakes in Weymouth, which serves traditional Middle Eastern cuisine and gourmet milkshakes.

In a previous interview with the Patriot Ledger about the business, Moataz Elbehiry credited Dante and his love for food as the inspiration for the restaurant.

Dante even crafted the restaurant's special garlic sauce, and often was the mastermind behind different specials on the menu.

"He's really into food, into cooking," Moataz Elbehiry said at the time. "So, we followed his lead. The whole family fights over his cooking. When he cooks dinner, everyone serves him, fights over his food."

Danielle Elbehiry said she tried putting Dante in day care when he was young, but it didn't work out. Instead, he stayed at home with her mother and learned how to cook alongside her.

"He made the most incredible things. People couldn't believe it," she said. "He would take so much time plating his food. He took a lot of pride in it."
