Other attractions include recreational activities like hiking, fishing and mountain biking, as well as whitewater rafting nearby in the New River Gorge.

Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park
At Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park you’ll find incredible views and Civil War history. The park is set on the rim of the Gauley River Canyon and is an important Civil War battle site. In fact, it’s part of the Civil War Discovery Trail, which links more than 300 historical sites in 16 states, and commemorates the 1861 Battle of Carnifex Ferry, a major Union victory that led to the eventual Confederate withdrawal from western Virginia.
