After weeks of eating to-go meals at home, many people are excited to just be able to eat a meal at the restaurant.
Even though the Governor hasn’t opened indoor seating for restaurants yet, there are some new protocols for restaurants hoping to help the restaurants.
The big one is allowing people to eat your takeout in restaurants outside seating just with no service.
The owner of La Pizzeria says restaurants are needing all the extra help right now.
“We look forward to the day that we can get back to some kind of normalcy,” said Randy Daniel, La Pizzeria owner. “It’s going to be a start with that with outside dining.”
Daniel says things have been tough for restaurant owners during this pandemic only offering takeout.
“It’s a one, two punch right now,” said Daniel. “There’s just so much that people can really order to-go. There’s a lot of restaurants out there we have great community support in Acadiana and we’re very thankful for that. But it’s just a hard struggle we’re looking at a 40% decrease in sales as just this restaurant and we’re doing better than most right now.”
With the new Governor’s mandate restaurants are looking for ways to serve customers and follow the rules.
“We’re going to be allowed to have customers sit on our patio but we’re not allowed to actually serve them,” said Daniel. “So we’re going to treat it like curbside takeout. We spread out our tables 6 feet apart. Everything’s going to be takeout. At the very least we’re going to have to go out and clean the tables, but that’s going to be the only interaction.”
But will eating outside bring more customers their way?
“I think it’ll help,” said Daniel. “It’s going to be a small step. I don’t think it’s going to be the answer to everything.“
While some have this option with the patios, others will remain closed and many owners feel they’re running out of time digging a deeper hole.
“We are on a ticking time bomb in the industry,” said Daniel. “Our restaurants need to get back and open up as close to normal services as we can. So we’re going to just do what we can to maintain as long as we can.”
Daniel says he and other restaurant owners are anxiously waiting to hear when they can finally have their customers come back inside to eat their meals.
