Let them eat cupcakes - The Daily News Online

BATAVIA — While most of the staff were going about their jobs Thursday morning at Rochester Regional Health United Memorial Medical Center, bakery owners were walking through the front door with goodies.

Angie Messerly, owner of Aunt Angie’s Cakery of Batavia, and Kirsten Currier-Rennicks, owner-operator of KMC Custom Cakes, along with Lori Currier of KMC, brought in 300 treats for the UMMC employees as an appreciation for the work they’ve been doing since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

They brought cupcakes; strawberry, vanilla and chocolate cake pops and funfetti, leaving it to the hospital to distribute them.

Messerly said dropping off the sweets was “our little way to give back.”

“It’s a nice feeling to share a little joy and brighten up somebody’s day a little bit in the small way that we can with all the work they’re doing,” she said. “Thank you for all they’re doing and their time and their effort ... Crazy times — I think everybody needs to do what they can to spread a little positive.”

Currier said KMC wanted to do something special for the hospital, whose employees show up every day for work despite the uncertainty of what they’ll face.

“We knew it was a big job and we really couldn’t do it on our own. We reached out to a couple of different bakeries and Angie had agreed to come on board with us,” she said. “We were able to supply goodies to all the people who are working so hard as a ‘Thank you.’”

UMMC President Daniel Ireland told the bakeries, “I can’t thank you enough for this. The staff are going to appreciate it. We’re here for the community and we really appreciate you helping us out.”

He went on to say that all staff members are working hard through the COVID crisis.

“They’ve done a lot of extra work, things that nobody ever envisioned they would do,” he said. “To have the community come out — these folks (the bakers) and so many others over the past few weeks — to give to our team and recognize the hard work they’re doing, the sacrifice they’re making for their families to be here on the front lines. it’s just incredible.

“We have seen it in all forms, from mass donations to food to sweets,” Ireland said. “We’re here to serve the community. We’re here to be here when our community needs health care and it’s so good to hear back from the community and (get) support like this.”
