SOUTH BEND, Ind. A group of students from Holy Cross got to cook and eat a meal with South Bend police officers thanks to a program led by a sous-chef at the Morris Inn.
“I came from an impoverished neighborhood and we had a natural distrust for the police department, and I wanted to break that cycle and start anew with a new group of kids,” said Calvin Metts, the senior sous-chef at the Morris Inn.
Metts brought a program from Chicago called Cooking with Cops to South Bend.
“For the police officers and the kids, they're both new to the kitchen, so it gives them a chance to bond over it,” he added.
“I like the officers,” said Scott Tranberg Palmer, a sixth grader at Holy Cross. “They're very funny, they're nice to hang out with.”
“It's a great experience for the kids to see us in a different perspective other than the way they normally see the police,” said Division Chief Eric Crittendon. “It's a great opportunity where we have a chance to interact with the kids, cook with the kids."
Chef Metts started with two pilot programs, one with students from the Robinson Learning Center and then another with the Boys and Girls Club of South Bend.
This is the first time a group from a South Bend school participates, and it's a first for the South Bend Police Department too.
“What I'm looking forward to is that hopefully everyone is saying, 'Yum, it's good,’” said Chief Crittendon.
“I just want the kids to know that the sky's the limit, no matter what they want to do, no matter if it's not culinary or law enforcement,” said Chef Metts. “They have a lot of avenues available to them, and so I want them to see that they can do a lot more than they think they can do.”
On April 25th, the students and officers will reunite to cook a Mexican-style brunch for a fundraiser at Holy Cross.
