Five Essential Cooking Tools For The Serious Home Chef - Forbes

My wife is a professional pastry and cooking instructor, and part of her job is testing products for her Santa Monica culinary school. When she raves about something, I know deliciousness is about to come out of her kitchen. Here are a few products she's been enjoying recently. Forgive me in advance if my mouth is watering while I'm writing this.

The Cuisinart Elite Collection 2.0 14-Cup Food ProcessorCuisinart

The Cuisinart Elite Collection 2.0 14-Cup Food Processor ($299) is an overachiever, to be sure. It slices, chops, purees, pulses, grinds and kneads. The machine powers up with a 1,300-watt motor and saves counter space with its 4½ cup small bowl nesting inside the larger 14-cup bowl. The chopping, mixing and shredding blades pack away in an accessory storage case. Removable parts are all ready for the dishwasher and the electronic touchpad glows with blue LED lights. The unit carries a 20-year motor warranty on top of the overall three-year limited warranty. My wife has used hers in and out of class for several years and it's a dependable workhorse whether munching onions or pounding dough.

Vitamix Pro Series 750Vitamix

For smoothies, soups, purees and frozen concoctions of all sorts, the champion on the counter is the Vitamix Professional Series 750 (Around $600). The blender supreme has five preprogrammed settings and a commercial-grade 2.2-peak horsepower motor that maintains a consistent blend and also self-cleans in 30 to 60 seconds with a single drop of dish soap and warm water. Adding the Vitamix Aer Disc Container ($145) lets you whip, foam, muddle and emulsify. It's great for extracting essential oils and juice, or preparing mojitos and such. Liquid ingredients are aerated through small holes in the spinning disc, while ice, fruit, and other firmer ingredients are shaken but not foamed.

ThermoPop from Thermoworks gives you pro temperature monitoring accuracy at an affordable price.Thermoworks

We are a loyal Thermoworks family, having relied on our Thermapen "best in class" thermometer for years of cooking and grilling to perfection. The Thermapen is often cited as the pro chef's choice for reading temperatures, and the new Thermapen IR comes with the same speed and accuracy but adds a built-in professional infrared thermometer for surface temp readings. They're not cheap, though. The Thermapen starts at $79 for the classic and goes up to $139 for the IR. For something easier on the budget, go with ThermoPop, a pocket digital handheld probe, which, for $35, gives you a superfast digital read on how hot that meat, chicken or fish is. My wife loves the customer service. A few of her Thermo products have conked out under tremendous use, and the company quickly made the fixes at no charge or swapped out the old one for a new unit.

Snowpeak's Gigapower folding torchSnowpeak

The new GigaPower Folding Torch from Snowpeak is great for grilling. It lights a charcoal barbecue or wet firewood in seconds. The unit has a wooden grip that can be folded for easy storage, and it goes anywhere. In short, GigaPower lets you chill about firing up the grill for around $60.

The Iconics set of kitchen tools starts you off with the basics you needMaterial kitchenware

For her intro cooking classes, my wife recommends kitchen tool sets, and Material kitchenware's The Iconics collection ($245) is a great one. It includes a six-inch serrated knife, a whisk, slotted spoon, mini colander, tongs, metal spoon and an eight-inch knife. It's all housed in an attractive wooden in walnut, maple or midnight black.
