SPOKANE, Wash. - Kirstin Davis with the City of Spokane says we are just a few weeks away from being able to walk the entire 3 ½ mile Gorge Trail loop around the Spokane river near downtown Spokane.
Davis said the city's goal is to open the trail and the Post-Street Bridge on the same day, sometime during the first week of June.
The final connection for the Gorge Trail loop is underneath the Monroe Street Bridge. It will connect the Spokane Club to the Places of Truth Plaza near the library, so walkers do not have to cross the busy Monroe / Main / Spokane Falls Blvd intersection.
The new path will go under the Monroe Street Bridge, just like on the north side of the river.
The city has looked at this project for decades, now all they need are a few more materials that they are getting over the next few weeks to finish. They want the trail and the bridge to be open for the remainder of Expo celebrations in Spokane.
"Not very many cities have a river that runs right through the middle of it," said Davis. "So on your lunch break or if you are just in town for a few hours, it's a great way to see the river and get a little bit of exercise."
The Post-Street Bridge is also almost done. Crews are striping and putting in some planters to beautify it before reopening.
The city has not specified what day during the first week of June these will open. When they make an announcement, we will let you know.
