The National Parks Service has announced a public forum will be held to discuss the proposed demolition of deteriorating structures within the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.

The meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 10 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Bank of Glen Jean, located at 23 County Route 25/9 in Mount Hope, according to a news release from park staff.

The news release said demolition of following structures will be reviewed:

  • Brookside Pool Chemical Treatment Building
  • Charles Ashley Garage
  • Charles Ashley Outbuilding
  • Cochrane Farm Outbuilding No. 1
  • Cochrane Farm Outbuilding No. 2
  • Dun Glen Ark
  • Dun Glen Boat Storage Rack
  • Dun Glen Building
  • Dun Glen Mini Ark
  • Erskine Pugh Rental House
  • Harold Smith House
  • Harrah Coal House
  • Harrah Hen House
  • Harrah House Remains
  • Harrah Outbuilding No. 1
  • Harrah Outbuilding No. 2 Remains
  • Harrah Outhouse
  • Harrah Smokehouse
  • James Humphrey Senior House
  • James K. Carper Barn
  • James Phillips Farm Shed
  • James Phillips House
  • James Phillips Outbuilding No. 1
  • James Phillips Storage Building No. 2

  • May Bagoski House

  • Prince Brothers' General Store
  • Sidney Allen Ward House
  • Thurmond Ice House

  • Tom Kelly House
  • Vallandingham House Addition

Park staff report 21 of the structures are "considered historic and are either listed, or eligible for listing, in the National Register of Historic Places."

While some of the structures may hold historical significance, the National Park Service proposal notes they pose safety risks and may increase operational costs:

Many of the buildings and structures came into the possession of the NPS through land acquisition within established park boundaries. Most were not intended for reuse by the NPS and are now abandoned, dilapidated and overgrown safety hazards that are vulnerable to trespassing and vandalism and are a burden to maintain. Removing the unnecessary structures would address deferred maintenance needs and eliminate excess yearly maintenance and law enforcement costs, allowing staff to focus attention and financial resources on maintaining other facilities and resources that park visitors can enjoy.

An environmental and cultural review for demolition is expected to start next year. NPS said the impact of removal will be assessed by the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act.

For residents that cannot attend the in-person meeting, public materials and information will be available online until Jan. 15.
