Multiple school districts in the Gorge and in Clark County have delayed their start times or have closed due to the winter weather.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Snowfall in the Columbia River Gorge is impacting some schools and causing dangerous driving conditions on Interstate 84 Friday morning.

Multiple school districts in the Gorge and in Clark County have either delayed their start times or have closed due to the winter weather. Among those districts, Hood River County and White Salmon school districts are closed.

KGW photojournalist Eric Patterson checked out I-84 and reported snowy and slick conditions, as temperatures were still below freezing. He saw a semi-truck that had crashed on I-84 westbound, just west of Multnomah Falls.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office is encouraging anyone driving east on the interstate or through the Gorge to use extra caution. The sheriff's office advised drivers to carry chains, brake gently to avoid skidding and sliding, budget extra time for travel, and allow extra stopping distance to account for less traction on snowy roads.

A front bringing steady rain to the Oregon coast and the Willamette Valley is expected to push through the Gorge by 9 or 10 a.m., turning snow into rain, according to KGW meteorologist Rod Hill. Temperatures will warm into the 40s.

On Thursday,  KGW viewers around the Gorge and in Clark County began sharing photos of the snow in their neighborhoods.
