On Jan. 31, 1957, the Canadian Parliament proclaimed, “A day of general thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed … to be observed on the second Monday in October.”

So, as we approach Thanksgiving on Oct. 10, many families will be sharing in the tradition of a Thanksgiving feast with more food than they can possibly eat.

Sadly, instead of sitting down to a large bountiful feast, a large number of Canadians (and others) will visit food banks and soup kitchens.

Yes, that happens even in rich countries such as Canada.

So, what exactly does a Canadian Thanksgiving mean?

It is a feast with family and friends to stuff themselves silly with turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, squash, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and a myriad of other culinary delicacies.

A UN report says one-third of all food produced never gets eaten.

The waste is clogging landfills and making the planet hotter.

So, how might Canadians’ Thanksgiving respond to these environmental concerns?

Well, Thanksgiving suggests gratitude. It is a moment to recognize that the things we enjoy and which enable us to live life abundantly — clean water, fresh air, food and arable land, family and friends — should never be taken for granted.

It is also a national day to recognize a “gift,” that the harvests of the land and sea and the relationships that give meaning to our lives are not simply there for the taking. They are things that have been given to us, and for which, we must be grateful.

Furthermore, Thanksgiving gives us a day off to reflect upon and express thanks for the fact that we are not independent, but dependent on our Earth, our family, our fellow citizens, animals, plants for those of a faith, that truly unites us across our home and true native land.
