Search and rescue teams have recovered a man’s body from Northeast Georgia’s Tallulah Gorge. Searchers found his body near the base of the canyon Saturday morning after they were dispatched to the area for a possible rescue.

Rescuers used a drone to locate the man and determined he was dead after rappeling into the gorge. High-angle Search and Rescue teams from Rabun, Habersham, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources spent approximately six hours extricating his body using a system of ropes and pulleys.

Officials still have not commented as to how the man wound up dead in the gorge. His identity has not yet been officially confirmed, according to the park’s public affairs coordinator, Kim Hatcher.

DNR Law Enforcement officials are investigating the incident and are expected to release a statement later this afternoon.

Tallulah Gorge State Park delayed its aesthetic water release and closed some trails while the recovery operation was ongoing. The water was released shortly after Noon and trails and overlooks that were closed have since been reopened.

Now Habersham will continue to update this story as new information becomes available.
