A busy Santee intersection was shut down Wednesday evening as authorities cleaned up chemicals that spilled in a non-injury crash, sheriff’s officials said.

The multiple-vehicle collision occurred around 3:45 p.m. at Mission Gorge Road and Cuyamaca Street, according to sheriff’s officials.

While no injuries were reported, one of the involved vehicles was apparently a work truck that spilled bottles of chlorine, according to sheriff’s Lt. Pat McEvoy. Emergency crews were working to clean up the spilled chemicals before they reached the storm drain.

The clean-up effort necessitated the closure of Mission Gorge Road in both directions between Cuyamaca Street and Town Center Parkway, McEvoy said. Westbound lanes of Mission Gorge Road were also closed between Cuyamaca and Mission Greens Road.

Sheriff’s officials asked motorists to avoid the scene and expect major delays in the area — near Santee Trolley Square, Mission Gorge Square Shopping Center and Plaza de Cuyamaca Shopping Center — into Wednesday evening.
