Make summer cooking safe - The Stokes News

Do you know which type of foods lead to the most illnesses? Some might think it is meats, but if cooked to their proper temperature, they carry much less risks. With that being said, the type of food that leads to the most illnesses is fresh produce. Fresh produce carries the most risk because it is not cooked. To reduce the risk of illnesses, make sure to always wash your fresh produce by either firmly rubbing or scrubbing with a clean vegetable brush the skin of the fruits while rinsing with running tap water.

Are you aware of the proper cooking temperatures?

Fish 145°F

Egg products 145°F

Whole cuts of beef and pork 145°F

Ground meat 155°F

Poultry 165°F

Stuffed products 165°F

Following these cooking temperatures will help prevent food related illnesses. If you have any questions related to food safety, contact, Patti Snyder at 336-593-8179 or pebruce@ncsu.edu.
