I-84 reopens in Columbia River Gorge - OregonLive

Oregon transportation officials reopened a 47-mile stretch of Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge that had been closed since Tuesday afternoon.

The closure of the freeway from Troutdale to Hood River lasted nearly 31 hours. Icy conditions have improved as of Wednesday evening, but some areas may still be slick, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation.

Large vehicles and those towing are required to use chains for much of the reopened section of freeway, from west of Bonneville to Hood River.

Road crews will continue to plow and spread sand, salt and deicer on the freeway, the transportation agency said. But another round of winter weather is expected Thursday. The freeway could see new accumulations of light snow or ice.

Travelers heading through the gorge should keep a close eye on the forecast. The state transportation department posts updates on weather-related closures and driving restrictions at tripcheck.com.
