A Valentine's Day couple gorged on steak, lobster and "numerous bottles of wine" at a pub, racking up a "hefty bill" then left without paying.

The Mill's owners warned the couple they had been caught on camera and gave them a deadline to cough up the cash before going to the police.

An "anonymous female" has now settled the £180 bill after going to the award-winning venue in Stokesley, near Middlesbrough.

The pub's owners publicly warned the couple that they had been caught on camera, as reported by Teesside Live.

The Mill gave them a deadline of 4pm on Tuesday to cough up the cash before going to the police.

They posted on social media: "To the lovely couple that racked up a hefty bill consisting of fillet steak and lobster, numerous bottles of wine….

"Whilst we’re sure it was an honest mistake on your part that you left without paying, please pay your bill by 4 o'clock today.

"You were sat opposite a camera and the CCTV couldn’t be clearer."

The pub later said that they had made contact with the couple and had been told that they would pay up on Wednesday when the male half of the couple got paid.

However, at just after 8pm on Tuesday night, The Mill announced that the £179.20 bill had been paid by a female.

They posted online: "The bill has been paid by an anonymous female believed to be his girlfriend! Bless, who said romance is dead."

A number of people took to social media to condemn the couple's actions. "If they do pay," one lady wrote before the bill was settled, "I hope they leave a substantial tip lol. Cheek of it, going for a meal and not paying."

Others also questioned why the couple ate there without having the funds in the first place.

"When he gets paid?" one poster wrote, "so he had no intention of paying, wow just wow."

"Why would you go out for a meal two days before you get paid if you can't afford it?," another added.

"I really hope they do the right thing."
