A log truck driver was admitted to Gisborne Hospital yesterday after his rig crashed off State Highway 2 in the Waioeka Gorge and the trailer flipped and spilled some of its logs.
The highway was finally re-opened to normal traffic flow early this morning.
The crash happened at around 3.15pm yesterday afternoon near the Manganuku Stream.
“The truck went off the road and down the bank towards the river. The logs on board stayed on board,” an emergency services spokesman said.
“But the trailer tipped over as the truck left the road, and some of the logs on it spilled, blocking the highway.”
The road was completely blocked until a forester with a chainsaw was able to cut the ends off some of the logs.
“That created enough room for the road to reopen to one lane trafic around the crash site,” he said.
The driver was tended to at the scene by a paramedic from the Trust Tairawhiti Rescue Helicopter.
“He had suffered some moderate injuries and we flew him to Gisborne Hospital for further assessment and treatment.”
The 47-year-old man was admitted and the hospital reported this morning he was in a stable condition.
Gisborne Hiabs were called to the scene to recover the truck and trailer, and its load of logs.
Police said the highway was finally fully reopened at around 1.30am today.
Firefighters from Opotiki and Matawai also responded to the crash, along with Opotiki police.

The trailer flipped on the road, and the truck plunged down the bank towards the river.
