Cooking with Heather, turkey and stuffing in the slow cooker - WVLT

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - We are freeing up space in the oven and the stove by making a small turkey and some stuffing in our slow cooker this Thanksgiving.

This is a go-to recipe that Heather Haley likes to use when Thanksgiving is busier and even warmer. Think about how much heat that oven puts off! Okay, this is just an easy alternative if you’re looking for a different way to cook that main dish.

WHAT YOU NEED:

Small Turkey or Turkey Breast

Stuffing Mix

Broth or stock (half a cup per box of stuffing mix)

Butter

Seasoning (your choice)

TIME TO COOK

Rinse your turkey, just as the packaging instructs. Using a liner in your slow cooker is a great idea if you have some! It just helps with the cleanup time. Put your turkey in the slow cooker and go ahead and turn it to your preferred setting. If you cook on high, it will be done in about 4 hours, but it will take 6 to 8 hours if you’re cooking on low. To know if it’s ready, the internal temperature should be 165 degrees.

I like to put a little butter and seasoning on top of my turkey. I chose Cajun seasoning this time, but you could really go with anything. Lemon pepper, steak seasoning mixes, cinnamon ... you really can’t go wrong here!

Now mix your stuffing mix and broth or stock, and put it around your turkey. Now, if you have a small cooker that’s already pretty full from the turkey, the stuffing can go on top. The turkey will put out a lot of moisture and it’s trapped in our slow cooker, so this makes for a moist bird but also helps to keep our stuffing from drying out. BUT, I do like to check on it and see if I need to add a little broth.

This can free up your oven and stove for other goodies, or to just keep you from having to stand around cooking for hours. Enjoy and happy Thanksgiving!
