CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Park Service has scheduled a prescribed burn in the Grandview area of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve for Saturday.
The agency said the burn will consist of 14 acres in Carper Field. The effort will begin early Saturday afternoon and last for several hours.
The purpose of the burn is to prevent the field from becoming a close canopy forest, which would affect declining populations of grassland bird species. The agency will maintain the field while promoting the establishment of tall grass species.
