A recovery team led by the Taos County Sheriff's Office has retrieved the body of a man who fell to his death from a cliff in the Rio Grande Gorge on Friday (July 23).

The man has been identified as 65-year-old Odessa, Texas, resident Marc Diaz.

Diaz was hiking along West Rim Trail with a group of friends late in the morning on Friday, when he lost his footing at the edge of a sheer cliff and fell about 75 feet to his death, according an update from Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe on Saturday (July 24).

Initial efforts to recover the man's body on Friday were postponed due to an afternoon thunderstorm, Hogrefe wrote. On Saturday, a team that included members of his office, Taos Volunteer Fire Department, Taos County Emergency Services and a technical ropes team from Los Alamos managed to safely descend the cliff, recover the body and bring it back to the gorge rim.

"This is a stark reminder that accidents can and do happen without warning," Hogrefe said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Diaz's family and friends."
