A man died late morning Friday (July 23) after losing his balance and falling from a cliff along the western rim of the Río Grande Gorge, the Taos County Sheriff's Office has confirmed.
The man's identity has not yet been released pending notification of his next of kin.
A group of people he had been hiking with when he fell about 1 mile south of the Río Grande Gorge Bridge were still waiting as of noon Friday while members of the sheriff's office, Taos Volunteer Fire Department and Taos County Emergency Services looked into the canyon to determine the safest means of recovering the body.
Taos County Undersheriff Steve Miera said he hiked down the canyon earlier in the day in the hopes of rendering aid to the man, but quickly determined that he had died from injuries he sustained in the fall.
Dispatchers called in a ropes team from Los Alamos to assist, but a thunderstorm that descended on the area Friday afternoon delayed the recovery efforts. At 2:30 p.m., Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe reported over an emergency radio channel that the recovery would be postponed until Saturday morning (July 24).
While steep portions along the rim are fenced off near the bridge visitor center, which sees thousands of tourists each year, many areas along the West Rim Trail are exposed, with sheer drops of 50 feet or more in some areas.
