The Eat Out to Help Out scheme, now in its third week, is continuing to delight diners across the country, giving them 50% off their dine-in food bills.

The government initiative has been popular, and the latest figures from the Treasury reveal that over 35 million meals have already been dished out.

Speaking about the success of Eat Out to Help Out last Tuesday, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said: ‘Today’s figures show that Britain is eating out to help out, with at least 35 million meals served up in the first two weeks alone, that is equivalent to over half of the UK taking part and supporting local jobs in the hospitality sector.

‘To build back better we must protect as many jobs as possible, that is why I am urging all registered businesses to make the most of this by claiming back today – it’s free, simple and pays out within five working days.’

So how many days left are there of the scheme and will it be extended?

Will the Eat Out to Help Out scheme be extended?

Officially, no. The scheme is scheduled to end as planned on August 31.

That means you have another four days left to claim your discounted dinner.

However, some restaurants have come forward to say they will extend the discount through until September, so you might have time to bag a bargain yet.

Scottish restaurant group the DRG told Glasgow Live they plan to extend the scheme up until September 2, while Derbyshire Live reports Derbyshire-based firm, Moorwood Hotel Collection, will extend the offer in three of its venues.

London steak joint Gaucho has also pledged to continue the scheme into September.

It is believed others may follow suit.

Chief Executive of trade body Hospitality UK, Kate Nicholls, has also voiced support for extending the scheme.

Following a discussion with LBC’s Nick Ferrari Nick Ferrari, she tweeted: ‘Just spoken about this [Eat Out to Help Out] with ⁦@NickFerrariLBC⁩ – the benefit to consumers, the importance to businesses and the need to continue it for another month to get the remaining 50% of restaurants and pubs reopen and successfully trading. Hugely beneficial.’
