Cooking at Mama's - WJHG-TV

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG) - Most of us believe our moms are the best cooks out there. That's the case with Panama City resident Bubba McCants. So seven years ago when he was tasked with making desserts for an event, he called his mom to help.

What started out as a call for help has turned into a family tradition spanning several generations. (WJHG)

McCants was volunteering for a program through the Children's Home Society.

"We would take kids from Clair's house. They were getting ready to graduate high school so we would teach them how to go through an interview and things like that," said McCants. "We would have a Wednesday night dinner with the kids."

Mccants was the only guy in the group so they put him in charge of desserts for the Wednesday night dinner.

"All the ladies made fun of me saying I was just going to Publix and buy some chocolate chip cookies," said McCants. "So I called my mom and said, 'I need you to come over Tuesday Night and bake some cookies.'"

When the CHS program ended they decided to keep the tasty Tuesday tradition going.

"It became known as Tuesday Night Cooking at Mama's," said McCants.

When McCants starting dating his now-wife Mary she was invited to Cooking at Mama's and says that pretty much sealed the deal. Now the couple has two daughters who are bakers in the making.

"Now when mom comes over she would probably rather see the babies than cook and that's fine with us too," said McCants.

A while back the McCants started sharing pictures of the finished product on Facebook and now have quite the following.

"We felt like it was a positive way to spread some joy," said McCants. "We thought it was good to be uplifting and positive. Plus it makes you spend time with your family every week."

Sometimes the mom and son duo get requests.

"He will get e-mails with recipes, maybe from a family member so we'll try those," said mom, Judy McCants. "Some of them are just family favorites where I go back through my mom's cookbook."

Judy McCants writes notes on the recipes such as the date they made the dessert and whether it was for a birthday or other special occasion. They make two of the desserts one for the family and one for Bubba to give away.

"I feel like he always knows who needs it," said Judy McCants.

They always write an encouraging note with a Bible verse on the top of the wrapping.

And even though they don't always follow the recipe to the letter there haven't been any complaints with the outcome and they put that recipe on Facebook along with the picture of the two of them holding the finished product.

They're hoping the pictures of their fun family time will inspire other families to spend more time together.

"There have been some others who've started doing the same thing with their kids," said Bubba. "Some other people have done something oriented around sports or whatever they're into to create a time to spend with family that's consistent. We'd like for this to be not just cooking with mom and her son and the family on Tuesday nights but to take it and someone else make it even better."

The entire family sits down for a meal together after the Tuesday Cooking at Mama's segment; a time they try to never take for granted.
