Cooking classes return at Holiday Market

In-person cooking classes at Holiday Markets Mirepoix cooking school have started back up. Mirepoix offered virtual cooking classes during the pandemic. The classes take place on the second floor in state-of-the-art kitchens at Holiday Market on Main Street in Royal Oak. Classes offered range from dinner and wine events to hands-on cooking and cooking boot camps for those who want to build cooking skills from learning the basics to advanced techniques.  The cooking stations, according to its website, are designed for six people and have their own prep table, stove, oven, kitchen equipment, and ingredients.

Prices range depending on the class. Chef Daniela Abel is Mirepoix's new head culinary instructor and the school's executive chef.

Townhouse Detroit gets big renovation

Look for big changes coming to Townhouse Detroit, one of the restaurants under Jeremy Sasson's Heirloom Hospitality umbrella.

Closed since November 2020, Townhouse Detroit has been totally revamped and renovated.

Sasson said most of the heavy lifting inside has been done including a full kitchen renovation. What's remaining are the décor and cosmetic elements.

Expect a brighter and more airy space, Sasson said. Instead of dark wood accents and polished concrete floors, there will be softer elements with "washed oak hardwood floors, plush seating with the presence of curves, natural accents and greenery will refresh the opened-up interior— accomplished by the removal of separation walls, the addition of a display kitchen, as well as a redesigned atrium with a retractable roof.," according to a news release.

There will be less seating but the space will be more open.

Instead of the sushi bar, there will be more of a focus on raw seafood and meat. There will be more seafood and vegetable-forward plates and a gourmet dessert bar.

The plan is for Townhouse Detroit as a restaurant destination amid city life or for special occasions and business dinners. Its signature Townhouse burger will still be on the menu.

Sasson is anticipating a reopening sometime in July.

The Townhouse has been open for nearly six years and Sasson said it was time for a change.

"I felt like everything, restaurants are stories and experiences that need to evolve," he said. "Detroit has another chance to open another chapter in its food and beverage hospitality industry. "

Sasson's also is working on plans for Sauce, a California-inspired Italian eatery in Midtown, which is expected to open by year-end.

Prime + Proper upscale steakhouse and a Townhouse Birmingham location also operate under Sasson's Heirloom Hospitality group.
