Cooking under pressure class offered - Jamestown Sun

Are you wondering what the hype is all about regarding electric pressure cookers? Or maybe you received one for a gift, and you’re just not sure how to use it? Electric pressure cookers such as “Instant Pots” have become very popular, but these appliances can be a bit intimidating at first.

Many brands of electric pressure cookers, or multifunction cookers, are available with several different features. Some functions you may see include slow cook, sauté, sear, simmer, steam or warm. There may also be functions that are specific to cooking certain foods, such as rice, yogurt, stews, soups or roasts.

All of these options can be a bit overwhelming. While it may seem like they can do it all, these appliances do have their limitations. For instance, these appliances are not meant to deep fry or pressure can foods. It is also important to keep in mind all of the safety precautions and read the instructions thoroughly before use.

You may be hesitant to use electric pressure cookers out of fear of an explosion happening in your kitchen. Most models have safety mechanisms in place to help reduce safety risks. However, following the safety guidelines is still important. For example, it is best not to leave the house while the cooker is in use. You should also not try to open up the cooker while it is pressurized. And, of course, the steam that is produced could potentially burn. It is important to open the lid away from our faces and wear oven mitts to protect our hands and arms.

When used properly, electric pressure cookers do not have to be scary or intimidating. If you have one and have yet taken it out of the box, NDSU Extension is here to help.

These classes are made possible by the North Dakota Beef Commission through the Beef Checkoff Dollars.
